UVU here I came!!

As of Monday, I am officially a enrolled student at Utah Valley University. I am now a Wolverine. I went from a Bruin to a Wolverine. I am really excited to get started on my Bachelors degree and get back into school. Although, going to a University is really nerve racking. But since I got moved to Orem to work, I figured that Utah Valley is the best way to go, (and the fact BYU is hard to get into). According to Andy Low (co worker who goes to BYU) I am now what he calls a "BYU reject!" I will gladly take that if it means getting my degree done. I am excited to start spring semester after being off of school for 6 months or so. This is yet another step the right direction for me and my family.

Christmas week

At work this week of Christmas week, I have learned a couple of things and figured I would share everything I have learned, done and seen. Lets start with work.
This week at ICS I have learned that the Orem store is a lot slower then Salt Lake store ever is in the winter time. Its just been so so slow that I am more tired when I get home then when I am super busy. I almost have cabin fever from being in the doors for such a long period of time. At least I have had Andy (co-worker) who is out of school for break to keep me company and entertained.
I have learned that its ok to wear BYU colors one day and Utah colors the next. I supported both teams in there bowl games this week. The only person that noticed was Andy and he really did not mind. He believe we need to support both schools during the bowl season. So yes, I wore blue/white one day and red/black the next. Although I felt weird and out of place on the second cloths selection. Congrats the the Cougs and Utes for winning there bowl games against the Pac 10. Maybe those wins and a hopeful win for TCU will give the BCS leaders some insight to the Mountain West Conference.
I also learned I am really horrible at board games. This week I lost three games of risk, once game of life and one game of scrabble. I just cant win. Over the last couple of years I have told people I hate board games and cant play them. Well this week karma came knocking. Sure enough, it holds true and I cant win.
I also came to realize that Christmas traditions cause more problems then they help solve. Old traditions take preference over new ones or one that want to be created. Its the way its going to be and stay. To me tradition is a big part of life, but if some are not set aside or stopped new ones cant be created to make the holiday spirit bright. Times change, so should traditions. But I will continue to please old traditions and wait on new ones for a later time.
I am also grateful for the Holiday season. It nice that it only comes only one time a year. I don't think we as humans could handle more then one. Its funny to see how the Holidays are a good thing and a bad thing. Happy consists of everyone being more friendly, cheerful and in tune with giving and sharing. On the flip side, the worse comes out in people, driving curiously is out the door, everyone is trying to get some where faster then the other (even if the weather is bad), every ones is looking for help or hand outs around the holidays and traditions (enough said).
I am grateful for this time of year and have learned this year that me and my own family don't put enough emphases on Christ in Christmas. I need to be better the next time around. I see that its more of a pagan holiday then a spiritual holiday of what it should be. Although, we have seen family and spent time with them which has made it nice. Merry Christmas everyone and Happy New Years as well.

Kettenring Christmas 2009

So the Kettenring family had their annual Christmas party this week. We first all met at a little place in Lehi to eat, called Emmett's and Ethel's. Its a little burger joint that has giant shakes and pretty good burgers. I would recommend it to anyone looking to try a new little place. We had a good time talking and eating. It was a meal that none of us should have had. Grease, Sugar, fat are three ingrediants not to be mixed with a bunch of dieters, and one freak'n. But it tasted so so good.
After we went to see the Christmas lights at Thanksgiving Point. I have to pose the question at this point: Is twelve people in a eight person Tahoe illegal? Answer.... Yes, but we fit everyone in the SUV anyway. We had eight adults, four kids and a little dog named Dash! It was fun to have everyone in the truck and be able to see the lights. My nephew loved looking at Dash, the kids loved the lights, the adults laughed at the kids reactions and some one (not to be named) wanted me to keep slowing down. In my defense I went as fast as the car in drive went. I barley touched the gas pedal. so there!!! After we saw the Reindeer that where on desplay. The kids loved looking at the reindeer, and playing in the snow they had around. The kids Kinni, Tait and Ethan liked the snow so much each of them had to try the hard, somewhat clean snow. Dirt never hurt right??
It was a fun filled night for a Kettenring party. Merry Christmas to all.

Frozen Tundra

I can not believe that over the last couple of days, Utah has been in the single digits for temperature or less in some places. It has been down right cold! I can not believe how cold it has been. At work, a couple customers have come in saying they have seen the weather down as low as -30 close to Delta. That is really impressive. I have not heard about that kind of cold since being in Alaska. And I know cold!! I hope it gets a little warmer, so the snow is good. The cold just reminded me of the frozen tundra up in the AK. So I figured I would blog about it.

Remember Pearl harbor

Just taking a moment to remember those who fought, lived and died on this day in History! A day never to be forgotten.

Tiger Woods

So everyone in the world is talking, blogging and emailing about Tigers big mistake. I figure I might as well add my two cents and thoughts on the subject. To me, I am not really surprised by this whole matter with Tiger Woods. Anyone that is surprised by this is crazy! He is a very famous athlete, not just in the USA but around the world; He travels all around the nation to attend tournaments, and he only grosses over a billion dollars. I am not condoning what he did as being right but we have attacked him like this is the first time an Athlete has done this. Do we forget that Football, Basketball, and Baseball players do it all the time with out getting so much as a sentence read about it on the nightly news. I also understand that he has been the poster boy of what an athlete should be, act and portray but he is human. We all have mistakes and trials. He just finally got caught and we want to destroy his reputation rather then just tarnish it a little. He is trying to fix his mistake, actually apologized (not really done by other athletes) and move on with his life. We need to do the same. That's my two cents on Tiger.

Rivalry Week-BYU vs Utah

It that time again for the Holy War of Utah. When religion is thrown out the window, families are divided and friends become enemies. yes its time for the BYU/Utah football game. I am excited to be back at LaVell Edwards stadium again to watch the game. It has been a long time since I have been to the game. This year is even more exciting because it will be Alicen's first Rivalry game experience. She has never been to a game like this. Boy, is this going to be an eye opening experience for her, she has no idea what is in store. All the drinks thrown, dirty language used, fist fights over parking, play calls, and just being a fan of the opposing team. She is in for a treat. I keep prepping her but I don't think she even realizes the mayhem!! I am just hoping for a good game and have the cougars actually show up to play. If that happens, they are unstoppable. I just want BYU to tear things up on the field. We will have to wait until Saturday to see how the game goes. Go Cougs!!!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Real SLC

Congrats to Real SLC for their win in the MLS Cup match. I wont lie about watching the game but I only watched the goal kickes at the end, just after watching the Eagles beat the Bears. It was actually really exciting to watch. I would have watched more if I knew it was still on. Those kicks are really intense. I thought for sure Real would not win the kicks with the stacked team the Galaxy have. Alicen and I where freaking out watching each kick. For them to pull off this upset is awesome for the Real team but also the state of Utah. For Real to make the playoffs and then take it all the way was exciting. What a cinderella story for Real Salt Lake, just the way sporting events should end. The underdog winning the cup. Congrats Real!!

Four years is So So long

Today is my 4th year being married. I can't believe I have been married that long. Its been a great ride so far. Just like a good roller coaster, I have had my ups and downs and going all a rounds. Ha ha it all rhymes. But what a blessing it has been to have a wonderful wife and two great kids. They make my bad days better and my good days great. I am glad that I made the decisions I did four years ago to get married to my loving and beautiful wife, who has put up with me for so long. But also to have my great kids. I know I don't tell my wife how grateful I am for her and everything she does for me. But I really do appreciate her everyday. And this is just a little way to show my appreciation on such a wonderful day. Happy Anniversary honey. I love you!!

We three mice, part two

The saga continues on the mice of ICS. As I reported earlier, I put out traps and caught three mice. On Monday, while writing up a ticket for a customer he said "hey, there is a mouse running down your hallway that came from the kitchen." I thought I was done with mice. Anyway that night I moved one of my traps in the warehouse to the kitchen; just under the cabinets. Just seeing what I might catch there. Tuesday morning, as I worked at my front desk I could hear squealing. I figured it was the mice in the walls and kept doing what I was. My part time kid Andrew came into the office and heard the squealing too. He said I think you caught a mouse and its still alive. I figured I better check the trap under the cabinet. We went into the kitchen to see the mouse trap gone but could still hear the squealing. This is where it get good.
We followed the sound and found that not one but two mice have been caught on the sticky trap. One of them had gotten there tails stuck to the pad and ran with the trap, got to the closet and couldn't get to its hole, then another mouse came to help or something and got its tail stuck on the trap. So they both where stuck by the tails. They moved around so much they got our dust brush caught on the trap. So it was stuck too! We picked the brush up and along came the two mice and the trap. Andy told me to kill them but I had no idea how too. I have had all the mice dye on the pad or in a trap, I have never had them alive. So I took the brush and accessories and just throw them in the garbage out side.
I didn't know what to do. I thought about drowning them, but thought too cruel, thought about dropping a brick we have on them but too much of a mess. So I just threw them away. But that is now 6 mice in less then two weeks. I am down to one trap out of 6 and looks like I need more. Just like the customer said "if you catch 6, there are 6 more out there." I just have to say Bring It!!!

TCU Style'n

So KSL wrote an article about TCU wearing a new style of jersey and uniforms for the games against Utah. Since last year Utah did a Blackout games, TCU went with this new style. I really like the Whole get up. I think they need to stick with this look all the time. I wish BYU would do something like this once a season too. Maybe a Whiteout. TCU has the right idea.

I also want to make it clear that in the game between TCU/Utah I am rooting for TCU to win. Not just because I am a cougar fan but greedy for the BCS money they will get from the game. I am sure it will be good but I think as Mountain West fans we need to suport that team that can break the BCS. So go Frogs!!!

We three mice

In the Orem store, my part time worker Andrew and I have been trying to catch a mouse that has been running around on the showroom floor but also in the warehouse. We chased it into a closet the other day but failed to catch the mouse in a cardboard tube. Last Friday (roughly Nov. 6th) I found some sticky pad mouse traps in one of the drawers, so I decided to set some out in random places and see if I would catch this mouse. If the traps failed I was going to get a free cat on KSL. On Monday morning, I decided to go see if the traps caught anything, the first trap...Nothing! Second trap....Nothing! By now I figured I had picked the wrong places. Third trap...Success!! Not only did I catch one mouse, I caught a grand total of 3 on one trap. I was so pumped that I saved it for Andrew to see. Upon further inspection, I realized what really took place on that trap. Some time on the weekend, the first mouse ran across the trap and got stuck. The second mouse came upon the trap realized the first mouse was dead and started to eat (yes, I said eat) the first mouse. It then got stuck on the sticky trap and most likely died. The third mouse came upon the trap, saw the two dead mice and started to eat the second mouse. It too got stuck and ended up dying on the sticky pad. It was incredibly gross to look at, but I was intrigued by what took place on the trap. Success is all in the eyes of the beholder and I believe this is one of those moments.

Halloween has come and Gone!!!

Its amazing how fast holidays come and go. Halloween just came and went. We had a great Halloween though. It was a long day to say the least. We started the day getting ready and dressed up. Alicen and I dressed up as punk rocker zombies- I dyed my hair black and sprayed sparkles into it, Alicen dyed hers purple. Mckinley dressed up as a witch with purple hair and Tait was the odd ball out in a pirates outfit. We tried to spray his hair but he holds still for nothing. After we got ready, we went to the Grandparents house to show off the kids costumes and maybe get started on some candy as well. At the Kets house, we knocked on the door to no answer. My mom was in the shower, my Dad was asleep still and Jayson came and went because he was working on a Haunted house in the neighborhood. So we went inside the house and waited for everyone. My Mom came out and was surprised to see us there, the kids got pringles, candy bars and other candy. My mom filled them up!! Then it was off the the Forman's house, no one was really home there either. Mark was sick, Anna was home but getting ready her self, and Sally was M.I.A.- at the store but to be home sometime soon. Well after 40 minute and no Sally we packed up and headed home.
We where on a schedule to go home carve pumpkins, take naps and get ready to go Trick-N-Treating but we found out the Davis were going to throw there Halloween party later that night. So we had to switch our plan around just a little. We got the kids a good nap and skipped the pumpkin carving (we will be finger painting Turkeys instead on them). We also went out trick or treating a little earlier around ours house. We tried to hit all the ward members rather then every house, Kinni and Tait had a lot of fun. Kinni would say trick n treat and then Tait would say bye as we left. They got a lot of candy (even though there parents have hid it already). Once it got dark, we headed for home, put out a bowl of candy (for one kid to take) and went to the party up in Layton. It was a lot of fun. We had food, talked and just enjoyed the holiday. Its goes by so fast. The kids had fun, everyone one got candy and got dressed up. What a good Halloween. That was our Halloween this year.

Cornbelly's- thanksgiving Point

To get the kids into the spirit of Halloween, we took them to the Cornbelly activities at Thanksgiving Point. It was a lot of fun. I met the family at Thanksgiving point after work and picking up J Dawgs hot dogs in Provo (thanks Andrew for getting me hooked on these things- Glorious!!). Anyway we ate then went on all the activities that they offered. Tait liked the bouncing pads and even though bigger kids would run over the mat and send him flying he did not want to get off or leave. Tough little kid! Kinni on the other hand was a little more stubborn with getting out of her stroller and playing. She was cold, once that sun went down it really got cold. She did move once we got to the pumpkin princess area. She was able to put on dress and look in the mirror. But like I said she was cold and just wanted to stay warm. I gave her my hoodie to wear and that helped a little. But we went on the cow train, went down the slides and just had some fun. Last but not least, we sat by there big fire pit and warmed up. Although the smoke from the fire kept blowing in our face. It was a fun evening for us and the kids. We even got to pick out a pumpkin, Tait wanted the biggest one he could find and cried when someone else took it. Kinni only wanted the small squash looking pumpkin. So we had to pick them out for them. Once we left they loved the ones we picked out. We now have some to carve later this week. If it was not so cold I think the kids would have played a lot longer. Oh well it was still fun.

Happy Valley,UT

Since moving to the Orem store for work, I have found out that Happy Valley is not all the Happy. Sure the people are a little more relaxed, and understanding but it does not have the energy that a big city has, they try hard but that protective bubble stays in tact. Now don't get me wrong, I use to think Provo/Orem area was "gods country" with the Cougars in town but I have now disacknowledge myself on this statement and realized its not much different then any where else. Its just Utah County! Its a little different around these parts, Its still covered from our side influence and problems. I kinda like the feel and low key environment. I will keep posting on this matter the longer I am here. Just know that Happy Valley is not always Happy!

Swine Flu

So McKinley has been sick the last couple of days with a cough and runny nose. So yesterday Alicen decided to take her to the doctor to get checked. I got a call at work saying the doctor thinks its Swine Flu. Without even testing her, the doctor said she had the symptoms of the flu. This news comes just before we go on vacation, we are not sure what to do. We don't even know if she has the swine flu at all. Its kind of strange to say you have something but not to check to confirm it. But needless to say McKinley might have the Swine Flu or Bird Flu or just the Flu. Its all the same just with different effects. In my opinion is there really any difference. I think not!! But it has officially hit our house. My parents have been sick all week too maybe they have it as well. You never really know.

ICS Orem

Just from the title of this blog you know where I am going with this. I have been moved to store manager of the Orem location. Last week I was called into a meeting with the executives of ICS to be asked to change jobs, I was asked to either go back out into the yard, or try store manager of Orem. Both jobs were not what I was looking for, I liked being in purchasing and being behind the scenes of the job. I liked my two boss- Ken and Bob, so I was not happy with the idea of moving. I was given a grand total of 24 hours to figure out what I wanted to do. I actually took about 48 hours and decided to come to Orem and see another side of the company.
My reasoning to come to Orem was not the half hour commute or the waking up an hour earlier to get to the store. It was to see the sales side of the company and grow in that aspect; then to work with my friend Chase (who works outside sales). The company thinks Chase and I can make Orem a big store, I believe that as well. It will take some time but it will get better.
This first week has been one of long days- I have to be at the store from 7:30 to 4:30 everyday, eat my lunch at my desk and have only a yard guy to talk to for half a day. Its been really a different atmosphere for me, I am actually starting to talk to myself and that might be a bad thing. At least I have kept myself busy with a horribly dirty store, the clean up has made the day go by fast. Then Chase has been in and out all week, which is nice. I am not use to slow and quite. Its been a good and bad experience so far, I know we are going into the slow season but I hope that it keeps somewhat busy or I might go insane. We will see how long I can handle "Happy Valley."

BYU Football 2009

Once again the Kettenring family and Cox's got season tickets for the BYU Football. It has been a good season so far. Although we are only about half way through. We have enjoyed driving to Provo on the weekends to watch the games. Although BYU has started to fizzle the last couple of weeks. At the start of the season their defense looked like a stone wall, nothing could get through the line, now a couple weeks later they are really soft and ineffective to stop anything. Its really sad, I hope they can get back to season start form. As for the offense, they need to hold onto the ball. Dont get me wrong Max Hall is a good QB but 10 interceptions is way too much for 5 games into the season. The sad thing is he is trying to make something out of nothing. I am sure he will get better as the season goes. They are still looking good at 4-1 and still nationally ranked. So go Cougars!!!

Freak'n Diabetic!!!

Since my last check up about a year ago, I decided to start eating better, exercise a little more and get myself in shape. My first step was to stop drinking my usual 100+ ounces of soda pop. From that time I have done just that. I got even more help once I graduated in the spring and did not have such a high level of stress. I have lost a total of 65 pounds with in this time frame. However with in the last month I found out that I had a little more help getting into shape and losing weight. I found out I am a Diabetic. Yes, a Freak'n Diabetic (as my Aunt LD would say). It has taken the breath right out of me. I figured that I was losing weight by exercising and dieting correctly, now I find that it might have just been the effects of diabetes. Its not a great feeling to know all that work was not successful. But I have come to realize I am what I am. Now every day I have to test my blood, keep dieting without eating the good stuff, and keep on exercising. It has not been to much of a change, other then the fact I have to explain diabetes to people because they think you have some horrible disease that contagious. My best friend even makes fun of me for it. Its a life style change but I think in the long run (if I keep it under control) it will be a good thing. But now I have joined the group and can call myself a "Freak'n Diabetic!!"

Nothing Better

There is nothing better then when I get home, to see my two kids at the window jumping up and down yelling "Daddy Daddy!" Then seeing them run to the front (or back) door and wait for me to come in. I have to pick them up and hold both of them for like a minute or two. Then they are done. It does me good to know that at a young age they at least like me, I know in years to come it will not be that welcoming. But for right now I am enjoying there enthusiasm as I come home. I love it.

New fan of Rugby

Over the weekend, while writing in my journal and flipping through channels. I stopped on the England station that had a rugby match just starting. Since preseason football not on TV and college not started yet, I tuned in. All I have to say is Holy Crap! I am a fan! I was really impressed with the speed of the game, the brutal hits and not much down time. It was great, I saw a guy on the All Blacks team run into an opponent, in which the All Blacks guy broke his eye socket and got a concussion, then someone else on the other team on a tackle broke his nose. There was blood gushing from his nose and parts of bone sticking out the top. It was gross, yet I was enthralled with the action taking place. The NFL has nothing on these guys, this guys make the NFL plays look like sissies. I will keep looking for more games to come but wow they have made me a fan.

Football Season

You can always tell when the football season is upon us. Here are some of the ways I have noticed it this year:

BYU- Training Camp, I have been more intune with what is going on in camp, what players are playing and which ones are getting hurt. I am also focusing in on what the UofU is doing (starting a true freshman-- crazy!!) That way I can give my bosses an ear full of trash talk. By the way only 21 days until BYU vs OK. Go Cougs!! Not to mention that we got our season tickets in the
mail today. Oh they are like holding pure gold.

Looking at new candle smells. Wishing I could find some manly smells for my office and home. Smells like grass, locker room, sweat, leather, woodchips, anything that says "hey I am a man. bring it!" Well for you men like me I have found something. A company called Hotwicks has those smells. I found leather, grass, beer (Believe it or not), carmel popcorn, Hippie smell and others. the Pigskin leather and grass are mine.

Preseason games, was excited to see my Eagles beat up on Tom Brady (hate that guy). But at last they lost by two points. Not good news. I did watch the Steelers beat the Cardinals on Thursday night. I told Alicen it was just nice to hear football talk as back ground noise. How I will miss John Maddens voice on MNF. Good news is my Eagles pick up Michael Vick! Good call on there part. Sure he just got out of prison, out of shape but give him a month or two. Wildcat offense will be crazy nuts in Philly.

Oh the season is here for the great old sport of football. What have I done with myself for the last couple of months when only Baseball has been on. Yarp! doing nothing. All you football fans, college or Pro get those arms loose and legs moving its almost time to do the wave!!

New way of following the Prophets!

New way of Remembering to follow the prophets!!

YO!! JOE!!

I finally got to go see the New G.I. Joe movie this week. My movie critique would have to be "two thumbs up!" I really liked the film. I got all excited to see it last fall when it first previewed. Alicen's work got tickets again and we were fortunate enough to get two tickets (sorry Cox's). I thought all the actors did a great job portraying the cartoon charactors. I thought Channing Tatum did a great job as Duke, as well as the girls. I am still a little skeptical with Waynes and Quid playing in there rolls. Just dont see an action hero in Waynes and the commander in Quiad, but they still acted great. The movie was a done deal though once I saw Brendon Fraiser as the trainer. What is funny just as he came on, Alicen leaned over and said "now I know you will like this movie!" Sorry I can not help that I am a Brendon Fraiser fan. Over all the movie was good, I just hope they make a couple more. I think it can handle making a series or something, at least a sequel. And now you know how I feel about the movie-- "and knowing is half the battle! Yo Joe!"

The 20 Dollar Bill

Between the Cox's and the Kettenring family, there is a twenty dollar bill floating around that neither one of us will accept. It all started by us buying the Cox's Cafe Rio one night. Katie said "we had to take a 20 dollar bill to cover dinner for them, or it would hurt "Danny's man pride!"" But we told them No, we wanted to buy them dinner. Well since that night it has been hidden, folded, fought over and abused by both of us. I have hide it in Danny's shoe, tools, car, and door. The Cox's have hide it in our kitchen, computer desk and now our returned DVDs. As it is now in my possession I will have to figure out a way to give it back to them. It has been fun trying to smuggle the 20 dollars back a forth, but this is not over!!

Father & Sons

Over the weekend the Cannon Stake had their yearly Father & Sons camp out at Beaver Ridge (church property). I made the camp out a total family affair. I invited my Dad, my little brother Jayson, Brother in law Mike and nephew Ethan. Then I took Taitan and Danny drove up with us. We had a great time. I thought we could all drive together up but as my mind figured everyone could fit, my mind forgot to add sleeping bags, coolers and other items. So my Dad had to drive as well.
At Beaver Ridge, we set up our camp in a new area where the church as made concrete Tables and benches. They are really nice to have. However where there are new tables and benches there are not fire pits. The fire pits are 10 yards away in the over grown Forrest. We tired to movie them but they were bolted down and unmovable. Although Danny might say others wise. We decided to just make our own, found some rocks and made a pit. It worked for the time we were there. We missed the fireside that the stake had because we were hungry. The rest of the night was spent talking and enjoying the great outdoors.
As for sleeping, I sent up a air mattress in my Tahoe (fit perfect) and threw out some sleeping bags. However everyone else slept in a tent. Danny had a three foot high air mattress, so he never touched the ground. I believe everyone slept good except for my Dad that froze most the night. It was actually cold up in the mountains for August. I do have to say, I would have slept good but Tait had to sleep right up next to me, I am sure I was warm. He did not give me any room to sleep and with being right next to my my left arm was up in the air all night and then a pole to hold the blanket over our heads but cause I did not want him to wake up at 5:30 when the sun started to come up. I finally had to move my arm around 7 am and Tait was up. My arm still is stiff.
After getting up, we ate breakfast that the stake provided, went and did a little ziplining (ethan loved that as did Mike) and then we packed up and took off for home around 10 am. It was nice to just get the boys together and go camping. Although my Dad recorded us on his video camera, who know what might have been send on that. I will have to keep you posted. Anyway it was a great over night camp out with the guys!!

I Dislike Parking Enforcement!

So I am very irritated with Salt Lake cities Parking Enforcement. Over the last 6 months we have been trying to get Parking Enforcement to come out and ticket all the care who have been parking right next to the stop sign and making it hard for us to get out of our own driveway. But every time Enforcement came out was during the day when the cars where gone. Finally, we gave up and just deal with the cars parked illegally on the street. Well last night, Parking Enforcement came down our little road to check up on the parking situation, well there was not cars parked illegally at the point but he still gave out a ticket. I got that ticket!! My car is passed due on Registration, so he gave me a ticket. I have all the paper work done and just needed to register online. Needless to say I got a ticket and I think it is crap! I makes me so mad, they cant come an get those parked wrong but I can get a ticket for my car parked in front of my house. So gay!!! I am just livid over the whole thing. The Parking Enforcement is on my crap list now.

I am so Jealous!!

This morning I was able to take Danny & Katie to the airport. What was unlucky was the fact I had to go to work as they took off to Europe for the next three weeks. Danny and Katie have been planning this trip for a while now and it finally came. I am so jealous! I so wish I could take that much time off and go on a trip like that. I would be so much fun. Both Alicen and I were excited and nervous for them. They are planning on seeing Italy, Germany and I cant remember the rest, and they are doing it really with only a backpack full of stuff. They are going to be staying at Hostles and taking trains, and cabs to there destinations. Even though I am jealous for them, I hope they have a fun time and enjoy everything they do and see. It was funny, that as I dropped them off at the International terminal they both looked excited, scared and worried. I guess that is normal emotions before a world vacation. I am excited for them to get back and see all of there pictures and hear their stories. Good for them to take some time for themselves and go see the world before having kids and settling down.

Taitan is One Year Old!!!

So on Sunday, we celebrated Tait's first birthday. We decided to have it a a park, we had decided on Murray park but it was packed with people, that we found a park up in Cottonwood to go to instead. We decided to grill up some burgers and hot dogs, but since we did not have a portable grill, we ended up using the permanent grills in the park. I know Kinda Gross to think of using but we did and it turned out just fine.
We had a good time playing badminton, eating food and just hanging out at the park. We had a lot of people come- we had all the Kettenring's, Parker's, Forman's, Ash's and Cox's. It was just a good time all round. Tait got a lot of great stuff for his birthday as well. He is really into Cars and trucks, so we got him a huge Tonka dump truck and everyone one else got cars, he got a walk along puppy (from the cox's) and a helicopter from the Forman's. He was excited for it all. As for his birthday cake we got him his own to play in. Boy, did he ever play, he had chocolate all over his body. He like the frosting and he would pick up a chunk of frosting and throw it all over. It was so cute.
I was glad when it was over, I had cooked on the grill, in the sun for a good hour and I was dehydrated and tired. I was glad to just sit and have some fun. It was a good birthday party for Tait. I cant believe he is one all ready. Its hard to believe he is growing up so fast.

Happy July 4th!!!!

Girls Camp

I think Girls Camp should be change to "Drama Camp." This week was girls camp for our stake and Alicen went up because she is a councilor in our ward. But in the three days she was gone I got more calls and text messages about how much Drama there was with our group of girls. Thank heavens that Boys are so much easier to deal with. I could not believe the mess up there. It was anything from food rationing to wrong camps sites to walmart breaks. Yes, Walmart was within walking distance of there camp. That is roughing it I know, sitting around a camp fire and seeing McDonalds arches in the distance. I never had that oppertunity in all my years at scout camp. The girls even had Flushable toilet. FLUSHABLE!!! I remember having to get the Bug (blue) Juice to put in our port-a- pottys to help that smell of something had died in there many of years ago. Anyway, other then all the problems it sounds like everyone had a good time. I think the leaders of the girls made more "clicks" between each other then the girls did. I just think it is funny that this kind of camping can be called roughing it. Maybe for girls it is. But I still have to comment on the whole ordeal. Alicen seemed to enjoy getting to know the girls a little more and I hope it all works out. At least at the Testimony meeting they had a lot of girls get up and say how great camp was. that is a plus.

No more Moonwalk!

Its crazy to think that Michael Jackson is gone. I was really shocked to hear the news. Alicen told me on our way up to girls camp for our wards leaders night. We where actually stuck in traffic up Parley Canyon when she told me. I really did not believe her. It kind of sad to see a Pop Star die like that. I can remember when I was little watching the movies Thiller and listening to his music. He was an icon back in the day. It might be a good thing or a bad thing to see him gone. He has had a rough couple of years lately. My question is why do so many celebraties O.D. they have everything going for them and they waste it. Sad Sad

Just an Update

Nothing has really happened to really blog about. Since graduating I have just been work and enjoying some free time doing what ever. I have not been golfing, or camping or anything like that. Just doing things around the house and yard that have been abandoned for a long time. Hopefully I will figure out what to do in my life, for the rest of my life. Right now I am just enjoying not going to summer school.

Associates Grad!!!

So as of yesterday I have my Associates degree in general education. I am so excited to know that I am done with a degree of some kind. I have been working on a two years degree for the last six years. Its nice to see a light at the end of the tunnel. I was worried because I took statistics this semester and have been doing average in the class. I had one bad test that made me worry. The final was on Monday and I studied all week and weekend long to make sure I had everything down. In the test, I started to get some test stress so I was worried I would not pass. Since I just turned in my test and left I was worried for my grade. It was not until about 24 hours later I found out I had passed. I was leaving my other final when Allie texted me. I wanted to just yell out loud but the halls in the south city campus (old South High) are loud. So I didn't. I am so excited. Allie got me a teddy bear with a Balloon for a celebration. I am just happy to be done with it and know there is light at the end of the tunnel. Now I have to figure out what to do next. That could be a huge step for me.

BLACK GOLD

So at my grandmothers funeral, my cousin Scott talked about his favorite beverages from the local 7-11 and such. He talked about a drink he called "Black Gold" its a third Pepsi, a third Coke and a third Dr. Pepper. He says he lives by it. Well it has been just over a year since my grandma died, and for some reason I thought of this drink. I dared to try it today. It was like a shot to the mouth when I took a sip. This could be the stuff that brings me back to drinking Soda Pop again. I have had to drink two 48oz of water to equal this stuff out. But I still want more. Its like a drug of soda. It is way good. Between the Pepsi and Coke it gives both drinks that extra taste that makes it good, then the Dr. Pepper takes out that gritty taste that both Pepsi and Coke have. It is just pure joy!! yummy! If you dare to try this it will give you that sweet tooth for more. It needs to have a warning sticker. I just thought I would take a second to post this glorious drink I have drunk.

My Birthday!!

So its been like a week and a half since my birthday but I figure I can still update my blog on that day. To start off the day I took work off just to have the whole day to myself, but also the fact Allie told me too or she would call Ken (my boss) and ask for it off for me. Anyway, the first item on the agenda was finding my present. Alicen hide it down stairs and I had to find it. If you have seen my basement it was going to be an adventure. I did finally found it and I got a laptop. I was so excited to finally get one, (although since my birthday I have used it maybe a hand full of times and Alicen uses it on a daily bases). It was a great present to get though. I am excited to use it. After my present, and getting dressed we went to eat breakfast or more like brunch. We went to the Original Pancake house up in Sugarhouse. It was really good. I recommend it to anyone that wants a good breakfast restaurant. McKinley got the smiley face Pancakes and both Allie and I got the Omelets. They are huge and so good.
After we went to Target to get our family pictures, we had been talking about getting them done and me having the day off made it a perfect time to go. Both the kids, did good for the first 15 seconds and some how we got them taken. After the pictures and waiting to see them I had to take the kids around the store. Not because they where rowdy but the fact that the lady taking the pictures was too worried that McKinley was going to break something. She was really irritating and more worried about the little things Kins was doing. But we got a steal of a deal with pictures. We got 5 sheets of pictures for like 26 dollars. Coupons are a wonderful thing. The picture came out great. I am sure my wife will post them on her blog before long. So check them out.
After pictures we dropped off the kids at my sisters house and went to get massages. I had not clue what was going on and just before we got to the Formans for the massages I got a call from my Grandma Kettenring asking how my massage went. I informed her I did not know and that she had blown the surprise. It was kinda funny. But back to the massage, I was really nervous to have one. Never had one before and once I know I had to get totally naked that was even worse. But I "Man'd Up" and boy was it nice. It was weird at first then really relaxing. I almost fell asleep after a couple minutes.
As for the rest of the night, we went to dinner at Johnny Carinos Italian restaurant. It was a nice place and OK food. We got the two for one deal and that is not a bad price. I got the angel hair with some type of olive and green pea topping, Alicen got the butterfly paste with creamy sauce on top. After we where going to see a movie but nothing really good was out. So we went back to my sisters and picked up the kids after talking to Mike and Robyn for a couple of minutes. It was a good day. I had a great Happy birthday!!

The Phantom

So on Tuesday night, Alicen called to see if I wanted to go to the play at Hales theater tonight rather then going to school. I asked what play was going on and it was their version of the phantom of the Opera. Hales theater called it- "The Phantom."

I said yes, because I like the phantom of the opera, so she called her work and got the tickets and I skipped class to go see it. We got 6 tickets for the show from a friend at her work. We called my parents to see if they wanted to go, as well as calling Robyn to came. We all met at the Crackle Barrel over by Hales theater to eat. It was OK food but has gone down hill since last there.
As for the play, it was really different. When you think of The phantom of the opera, you think of the music and the story you have seen before. The Hales Theater version was totally different then anything I have seen before. It was really good but short of perfection. It did not have the original music or story line. The acting was good and every ones voice was perfect in their own way. The girl that played Christine was beautiful and had a great voice. The guy that played the phantom was good but did not look the part. All in all, I would recommend the play to any one. It was good in its own setting. I was glad to go and spend time with my wife and my parents. I think they we're surprised to see we actually asked them to go and a surprise they accepted to go. It was a good evening and a good change of pace from just work and school. I hope everyone had a good time because I know I did.

Shout out to my Cous!!!

I just want to post on my blog that this last week in our Ward. My cousin Danny got called as the second counselor in the bishopric. It was so good to see him get that calling. Danny is a great guy with a good spirit. He will do great in his new calling, and really do the ward good. I am proud of him. I am glad that he got the calling and not me. Just thought I would give a shout out to him and congratulate him on his new job in the church.

Economicial Stress

So the economical stress of the country finally hit my employment. At Intermountain Concrete, they finally had to lay off some employees. Lucky for me, I was not one of those let go. The whole idea was scary. The day before we were to know who is staying and who is going- there was talk and comments said that made everyone nervous. You really don't see the problem until it hits close to home. The good thing about my work is that they don't want to lay off anyone unless really needs be. I liked how they handled this situation. They started by closing down a store that was helpful in the area serving but not making a lot of money for the company. Then moving employees from the store to another store. Then as for employees let go, one was a part timer, the other was a soon to be retired employee. The last was a good worker just in a bad situation. I don't like to see anyone in the company leave but they way it was done really helps know the company cares. In these stressful times it good to know that I still have a job and doing my best to keep it that way. I hope the economy can get back to normal and better.

Slacker!!

So I have been slacking over the last couple of weeks to update my blog. But I have come to realize I have not done anything to really blog about. My wife took care of her birthday and the zoo on her blog. Then between school, work and finding a house. I really have not done anything that I find worthy to blog about. So that is why I have slacked off. I only write to say I am a slacker but its not my fault. So other then its April 1st (all fools day) and the weather in Utah is Snow. I have nothing more to day. And no the snow is not a April fools day joke. We really have snow.

St. Patties Day!

Today is St. Patrick's day. Last night to get ready, put the kiddies to sleep and then decorated the house with leperchaun footprints and clovers all over the house. Then we left a little present on the table for both kids. I guess Kinni got a blast out of it and ran all over the house, (at least that is what I was told. I was all ready at work). But I dressed up in a green undershirt, then my green polo. I put on my four leaf clover necklace and wore my St. patties top hat. Although took it off once I got to my office. Its a little tight on the head. I was the only one at work to even dress up. Everyone seems to forget this holiday. Tonight we will go to my parents to eat corn beef and cabbage. Yummy!! Its going to be a good night. I enjoy this holiday. Everyone thinks its funny that I get into it but with a Grandmother that had fun with it, why not keep up the tradition. I hope others would too.

Kids make wimps of their Parents!

Every Monday night, Alicen and I have a family home evening with couples in our ward. This last Monday we got on the topic of kids and I told the story of this sign above. I figure I might as well put it on my blog too. The story goes- I was driving home one night and come over the viaduct on 1300 south in Salt Lake and this sign was on a billboard. I don't know if I just saw my little girl in the picture or thought of just kids going to bed hungry. But I got a sick feeling in my stomach and a little teary-eyed. Now I am not hurting financially to the point my kids would go hungry; if that is what you are thinking. But the sign just made me think, and with me being easily emotional over things (thanks Mom), This sign just hit me right.
As I continued with this story, everyone was cracking jokes. One of my friends Collin said it was funny I started to get teary-eyed. His wife shot back saying "you would do the same thing."They are due to have their first kid in a month. The whole conversation was so funny. Danny my cousin, said he saw the sign and didn't think anything of it. It's interesting to me, that I would have been like Danny before I had kids. Once I did have kids little things like this get you. Some one once told Alicen that when you have kids you look at everything totally different. I believe that to be true. Just like this sign who would have thought I would get so emotionally attached to a sign. It just makes me sick to think that there are parents that would rather buy beer, cigarettes, or other items instead of food to feed their kids. I could or would never put my needs above my kids. Anyway, that was the story. It was just funny to see every ones reaction to it. I am sure if anyone read this (please someone) you will laugh too.

February 19, 2009

Today is McKinley's birthday and she is 2 years old. I can not believe my little girl is that big. It makes me feel so old, however I could not see my life with out her in it. I am so glad to see her become a cute little girl. She is growing up so fast but making the best of every opportunity she has had in her own life and also in ours as her parents. She has been a handful with her being so indepenant and wanting to be so big. Everyday is a new advanture with her. Happy Birthday McKinley!!

Just like the Mish!!

I got a forward at work called "Godly Humor" from a co worker. They were all pretty good but this one was the best. The caption below the picture is just perfect. On my mission to Alaska, we had a inspiration drawing like this one. Only ours said "break the ice and Baptise." On this picture it has the two people frozen in the ice. Ours had the convert frozen in the ice with the elders out side. For some reason, this picture reminded me of my mission. Thought I would post it, just becuase that is how it some times felt in AK.

Film Class Update

Recently in my film class, we have been going over Genre's and documentaries. However, this week we have started watching Musicals. For Genre's, my teacher had us watch the western movies- 3:10 to Yuma, Stagecoach and Blazing Saddles. Yuma was really good and like a western should be now a days, action and gun sling. Stagecoach was good since it has John Wayne in it (I like John Wayne movies) but it was in black and white. Its a hard movie to watch since it all takes place in a stagecoach with no real climax. Blazing Saddle was made by Mel Brooks....Enough said. The three movies are so different in almost every way but they still have the Western idea.

After that it was onto Documentaries which were just plan boring. I had to watch a PBS documentary on Jazz and it turned into a history event. I could barely stay focused it was so slow. The worse part was the narrator- he was monotone and slow speaking. A real head nodder. The musical idea was the next week. My teacher likes to start off with older movies and work to more current movies. We ended up watching the movies "singing in the rain" and "stormy weather." I have never seen either but half way through singing I tuned out. Then the only part I watched in Stormy weather was the Jumpin Jive. The rest of the time I was doodling a superhero with a "K" on its chest.

I do have to give props to the dancers in both movies, they did a good part with dancing and such. The two guys from Stormy Weather was really good. I could never do or want to do as many splits as they did through out their dance routine. Towards the end it just looked painful to watch. Its too bad half my class did not see that part. Once the musicals started, about 50% of the class got up and left. I stayed to watch, even though I doodled ninety percent of the time. At least next week, we get to modern musicals. Most likely Phantom of the opera or Moulin rouge. I would laugh (or cry) if he brought in High School Musical. I will just have to see. But that is my update on what we have been watching. I am getting well rounded in different movies.

Its kinda sorta like getting the Heisman!

Like I said in an early post about buying couches from the clearance center at Furnature warehouse, I also found this football player statue there. I really liked it! I really dont know why maybe because it looks old fashion or something you could find at the D.I. I just thought it would be perfect sitting on my desk at work. As we're getting all the billing information taken care of, I asked the salesman "since we were buying couches how much for the football player statue?" His answer was perfect, he said "you can have it, only if you never bring it back and never let me see it again." I was just in shock. It was a done deal from there. As I carried it, I felt like I had just won the Heisman Trophey in a weird way. The statue having been on their sales floor as a prop for like 10 years and the owner was ready to see it go. Its really old looking, it has some scratches, dents and paint missing but I like it. I am now the proud owner of this statue. It cracks me up everytime I see it.

Shopping

Over the last couple of weekends, we have got furniture shopping. With our tax return coming back soon, Alicen wants to get new couches for our house. We have been every where around the Salt Lake Valley. The first two pictures were at Ashley furniture. They have strollers for the kids to ride in that look like cars. McKinley did not want to be in them until she saw how much fun Tait was having. So we had to get two. They liked running into each other, (the pictures are bad because they where taken by my blackberry phone camera).

The other pictures were taken at Furniture warehouse on Road Redwood. They have a huge rocking chair and we had to get a picture of them (again on Blackberry phone). This chair was not a big hit like the cars but they liked it for a minute or two. And we had a pushy salesman trying to show us everything in the store.

We finally found the couches we want at the Clearance center for Furniture warehouse still on Redwood. They are really nice. The only way we could find a couch big enough for me to lounge in and not have my feet hang over was a sectional. It was really nice and on clearance, which you can never go wrong. Anyway we will not have any more stores to run around in. McKinley had fun at all the stores because we let her roam free and she made the best of it. She would go to every couch and jump on them. It was great fun.

Sleep, I need sleep!

In a marathon, runners say you hit a point call the "wall." You are so tired and exhausted that you don't want to go on. Well I have hit that point in lack of sleep. Over the last week, I can almost count the hours I slept on my fingers and toes. Everything has made me hit that wall. To start off, I had a 5-6 page paper in my film class due, a math test to prepare for. Both of these due in a day of each other. When I have school work due, I work so hard on my homework, I dream about it! Making sleep obsolete and my night really long. On top of that my children cant figure out that night time is for sleeping. McKinley is almost 2 years old and still wakes up in the middle of the night to get a refill on her sippie cup. Then wants to have mommy tuck her back in and sing to her. I have gotten up to take care of that, and everyone knows trying to explain my mommy will not be coming in or explaining anything to a 2 year old is impossible. Then my little boy Taitan who is 7 months old, cant figure out how to sleep at all during the night. He still gets up 2-3 times a night. He was sleeping good in the front room by himself but Alicen disliked the pen set up and so he moved back to the room. No sleep again!
Then over the last week, Alicen has had a major migraine headache. Making her pretty much immovable. We cant seem to figure out what is wrong with her. But she is just in a lot of pain and she cant get to sleep at all.
Since I am such a light sleeper anyway, when Alicen is sick I am awake with her, (key note: Alicen is not quite when everyone else is asleep. Especially when sick). So lately I have been up for Taitan's fits, McKinley needing something, Alicen being so ill. Then not forgetting the sirens of police and fire trucks running up and down 9Th west, my cat chasing something in the house, neighbors getting home late or leaving early. I really am get exhausted. I now know and see why when my Dad sits down or lays down some where he is out in like 30 seconds flat. Life is exhausting I have come to find out. It don't look like its going to lighten up any time soon either.

A Toilet- to flush no more!!

So I don't know how many people hear about the guy that shot his gun and destroyed a toilet at the Carl's Jr. in Centerville a while back, but KSL today put out a article that the Carls Jr. has a funeral service for the toilet. I had a great o'l laugh about it and thought I would share. The article is as follows:
- A toilet will be laid to rest today in Centerville.
Earlier this month, a customer at Carl's Jr.

accidentally shot and destroyed a toilet in the
men's room. Workers and visitors will hold a
funeral today for the now-famous commode.
On Carl's Jr.'s Facebook page, a spokesman says,
"Our thoughts go out to the surviving men's room
urinal and porcelain sink."
The first 50 customers to attend the service will be

given Kaboom brand bowl blaster toilet cleaner,
which workers say was the toilet's favorite.
"It was such a shame," said Centerville Carl's Jr. manager,

Christian Martinez. "We have received e-mails
and cards from all over the country expressing
condolences for our loss.
Now just when you thought it couldn't get any better I want to add some of the thought people left on the comment board of the story. They are the best. I find this whole thing hysterical and fun for a Friday. As did other that took it all in fun. But here are a few comments-
  • It's just something done in total jest to lighten the mood on a Friday, for petes sakes. It's a refreshing change from overdosed babies, the wretched economy, gang shootings and the latest missteps of our politicians.
  • Mah, wasn't all that funny, but they tried. I personally don't come to KSL for humor, I come for the news, so I was a little surprised. If I want humor about the news I'll go visit the Onion News Network (www.theonion.com), since their whole job is to be funny or satirical.
  • RIP my friend. You were always there when we needed you, you took all the crap we gave you over the years, and you did it with dignity and style. I can't wait to see you on the other side!
  • Worker Comp, I hope the family gets a decent settlement, after all, he was killed in the line of duty!!
  • FIP- May he Flush In Peace or "Pieces"

Anyway I had a good laugh about this whole story. Its sad that they're are people who cant take a joke and think news need to be serious all the time. I thought it was a great story for a Friday morning. I am sure more funny comments will be made throughout the day. May the Toilet be remembered forever. I am going up that way tonight maybe I will stop and give condolences myself.

New Year excitement at ICS

This year at Intermountain Concrete has some new twist, that I am really excited about and figured I would write about it on my blog. Ken (my boss and main purchaser) and Bob (estimating) has decided to make things easier and get everyone on the same page. We are going to try and work every ones job descriptions into one job between the three of us. Yes, I said three- I guess I am not just the grunt worker in purchasing. Not to boast but I was told I am a valuable asset to this new plan(although, if to ask Ken about that statement he would deny it). We are going to try and train each other to be able to accomplish purchase product, estimating quotes and knowing mark ups, keep track of inventory and make sure products stay in stock through out our store, without any problems. We are deep into the works too, we got the OK from the President of the company and now just have to go through the Executive committee of the company.

I think this new plan will be beneficial to ICS and prepare us for a great future as a company. The only fear is summer when we really get busy if we can keep this idea in tack. I believe we can, we will just have to be flexible in our schedules. I see this helping the company to grow and take pressure off of each one of us, especially when we are swamped with too much work. We can kick it over to some one else who might not be as busy. Its a great idea. And the fact they are going to be using more computer technology then before is great. I believe we only use a small percent of the computer capabilities now and this new plan will expand that. We might make it to the 21st century in technology after all. It might not make sense now in this blog but I am excited for it possibilities.

Tim Tebow

So I wanna to start this blog entry by posing the questions- Is Tim Tebow over rated? Is he actually as good as everyone says?

My honest option is yes and no. I am kinda bias though to the whole Tim Tebow excitement. Every where I read everyone talks about how great he is and the best quarterback ever in the college profession. I would have to agree. I like him on and off the field. I like him because he is a good player on the field and a good leader to follow. Off the field he is a great humanitarian, giving and caring. Doing a mission last summer is amazing (too bad he's not LDS), and the fact that he decided to come back for his senior year shows youth that school might be more important then money. What bugs me is how much attention the media gives him. They over hype how good he is, its always Tebow this and Tebow that. I feel that is why people do not like him. He is very into his faith and christian like and people might feel inferior to him because of that. Not that its bad to be christian like, but too much media attention about his charitable acts can be bad thing, when other athletes don't get recognition he does.
I also worry that as a option quarterback he will not make the transition into the NFL, not many have as QB. I would hope he can, because he will be exciting to watch on Sunday as he was on Saturdays. The media is just setting him up for failure if he can not make the transition to Sundays. I don't want to see him be the next Tim Couch. However, I am excited that he is back for another year of college ball and a chance make a greater stink about this college career. Something about college ball makes watching so much better. And outside of BYU/Utah football country (the heart and soul of my life), Florida is a team I like to watch.

Spring Semester

I have now begun school again at the great college of SLCC.
Oh what a great institution to attend as well (did you pick up the hint of sarcasm). This semester I will finish up all my generals and graduate(fingers crossed) at the end of the semester. I decided to take a Statistics class for math, so if anyone knows stats look me up. And also a english, psychology and film class. I was excited for the film class. A class that you go to for a couple hours, watch movies and report on them; how easy will that be? I am here to say its not easy. Four hours of class, watching two movies back to back, oh my gosh!! I am so ready to go and never see a movie again. I just want to hide, curled up in a ball and rock myself to sleep after the class is over. I actually think I come home mean because of it. You can only stand so much Documentary films and Michael Moore.
I know I even found a pic of him at UVSC. Although I found the whole matter really interesting after watching the documentary "A Divided Nation." I have to agree that Orem/Provo area aka "Happy Valley" is a little too over optionated and critical of out side thinking. Really irritating and depressing to see some Mormon faithful make a joke out of this whole mess. It was sad. However I did find the movie entertaining. But four hours is a long time to stay focused on movies. The class will be fun and a well rounded discussion of movies that we may or may not like.
As for Statistics, I have a Bangladesh teacher who has a dry humor. He is great but just funny. I am already lost in that class and its only been a week or two. I am sure I will pick it all up. His first introduction with us was his job outside of school is an engineer at Maverick (gas station). He then went on to say don't judge me on just that. Gas is gas and Maverick gas is just like any other. If you think of Abu from the Simpson's saying all of this. It is actually funny. Anyway Its going to be a long but eventful semester.
